Avoid Online Scams the Easy Way

Nowadays, almost all transactions are being done online. From buying groceries, doing banking stuff, even booking your personal care appointments, almost every activity now has to pass through the internet. This has caused online fraudulent activities to spike up, especially during the onset of the covid-19 pandemic where everybody is stuck at home and has no choice but to stay on their phones 24/7. Just recently, the FBI has released an alert on a recent increase in online shopping scam, mainly focusing on advertisements on various social media platforms and other online shopping pages.

As an online entrepreneur, we are accountable for our actions, especially the ones we do online. It is our responsibility to ensure that the websites we visit online are safe and secure. But with all the nitty gritty things showing up on our smartphones and web browsers every day, how do we know if we are doing business with a legitimate website? We listed down the things that you should look for or avoid falling into a scam.

1. Secure SSL Certificate.

Just as with any other website that you are visiting, always look for the SSL Certificate. SSL or Secure Sockets Layer, is a modern indication that a website encrypts sensitive information and provides authentication that you are sending over your details only to the designated recipient.

To simplify, an indication of a secure website is the “padlock” icon or a “https://” at the very beginning of the website’s URL. This signifies that the website that you are visiting a safe and secure website. A wise reseller should definitely look for this from a good liquidation supplier. Always look for this to know that an online store is trustworthy and will protect your information, especially personal and payment details.

2. Check reviews and feedback from trusted sources.

When transacting with a business that you have never transacted with before, one of the most valuable ways to check if a website is legitimate is by looking it up online and searching for reviews. This way, you can see how well they did in delivering their products or service to real-life consumers.

3. Look and read the website’s privacy and return policy.

Don’t see one? Think again before doing a transaction with this website. A privacy or return policy usually indicates that a website is trustworthy and is not afraid of disputes. This is also a way for you to know that your data is only being used where it needs to be. This section is also where you can find details regarding warranties, product condition, dispute procedures, and other relevant information that you need to know when making a transaction with that particular website.

4. Research the company’s online presence.

An easy way to check a company’s legitimacy is by simply looking them up online and on social media platforms. Do they have credible online presence on most social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn? Does their website look clean and neat? Free from grammatical errors and questionable elements? Reliable websites should look professional and must not feel “fake” or “cheap” in any way. Try to visit all pages of the website just to make sure that you are safe should you wish to do business with them.
